Question :
As part of a project to build a sports stadium you're managing a sub-project to construct the automatic all-whether roof. Level 2 of the WBS displays the phases manufacturing, electronic and controls and testing. Level 3 contains two deliverables for electronics and controls, wiring and computerization. The WBS dictionary describes the work the computerization deliverable requires as installing the management hardware and software, and customizing the installation.

You are required to:
1. Construct the WBS
2. Determine the dependencies on Level 3
3. Create the WBS dictionary

Answer :

1. WBS Diagram

Question : Consider the following table which describes the activities to be done to build a house and its sequence.

Answer :

The essential technique for using CPM is to construct a model of the project that includes the following:

  1. A list of all activities required to complete the project (typically categorized within a work breakdown structure),
  2. The time (duration) that each activity will take to completion, and
  3. The dependencies between the activities

Using these values, CPM calculates the longest path of planned activities to the end of the project, and the earliest and latest that each activity can start and finish without making the project longer. This process determines which activities are "critical" (i.e., on the longest path). In project management, a critical path is the sequence of project network activities which add up to the longest overall duration. This determines the shortest time possible to complete the project.

From the above diagram, we can conclude that the most critical path would be :
= A+B+D+G
=3+2+3+1
= 9 days

and therefore the less critical path would be :
= A+C+E+F+G
= 3+1+1+1+1
= 7 days

Project Lifecycle

There are 4 main processes in Project Lifecycle :

1) Initiating:Involve starting up the project by preparing...
• Business case
• Feasibility Study
• Project Charter
• Job description

What is Project Charter?
It is a kickoff document to initiate the project where it helps to define the scope. What can we gain from Project Charter? Eg ; Roles and responsibility, customers and project stakeholders, risks and issues, complete scopes of the project and many more..

2) Planning :
Starts PLAN the work! How can we plan the project? Through the following tools :
• WBS – Work breakdown structures (detail on something ). Eg : From WBS, we could plan the budget based on WHO, WHAT,WHEN etc…
• Gannt Chart – Planning of the project based on activity and timeline.
• TOC- Table Of Contents or Data of dictionary.

3) Executing :Involves building the deliverables and controlling these parameters..
• Status reports
• Changes on scope, cost, etc
• Task List (issues that might be)
• Deliverables
• Forecasts the progress and performance

4) Closing / closure
• Closed out documents
• Releasing staff
• Handling over deliverables to the customer
• Complete post implementation review
